‘This strange process of typing on a glowing glass screen’: An Interview with Matthew Kirschenbaum

Resumo

Track Changes, by Matthew Kirschenbaum, tells the early history of word processing, roughly situated between 1964—when the IBM Magnetic Tape/Selectric Typewriter (MT/ST) was advertised as a word processing system for offices—and 1984—when the Apple Macintosh generalized the graphical user interface in personal computers. The history of word processing both as technological process and mode of textual production is deeply entangled with the changes in the technologies of writing as they reflect and contribute to efficiency and control in increasingly bureaucratic processes of social administration and organization. The literary history of word processing can be situated within this general computerization of the modes of production of writing. Kirschenbaum’s methods combine archival work in special collections and writers’ archives, oral interviews with writers and engineers, and hands-on descriptions of historical word processing machines. Track Changes is the subject of this interview.

Manuel Portela, CLP, Universidade de Coimbra

Manuel Portela é professor do Departamento de Línguas, Literaturas e Culturas da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra e é o atual Coordenador do Programa de Doutoramento em Materialidades da Literatura. É membro do Centro de Literatura Portuguesa da Universidade de Coimbra. Foi Director do Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente,  entre 2005 e 2008. É autor, entre outras, das primeiras traduções portuguesas de Cantigas da Inocência e da Experiência (1994; edição revista, 2007) e Milton (2009), de William Blake,  e A Vida e Opiniões de Tristram Shandy, de Laurence Sterne (2 vols, 1997-98), pela qual recebeu o Grande Prémio de Tradução. Publicou em 2003 O Comércio da Literatura: Mercado e Representação, um extenso estudo sobre o mercado literário inglês no século XVIII. Nos últimos anos tem investigado a digitalização da literatura e da cultura, tendo leccionado diversas disciplinas e seminários no domínio das humanidades digitais.

Manuel Portela teaches in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the Faculty of Arts, University of Coimbra, and he is the current Coordinator of the PhD Program Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature. He is a member of the Centre for Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra, and was Director of the University Theatre between 2005 and 2008. His many translations include the first Portuguese translations of Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1994; revised, 2007) and Milton (2009), by William Blake,  and The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (2 vols, 1997-98), by Laurence Sterne, for which he received the National Award for Translation. In 2003, he published O Comércio da Literatura: Mercado e Representação [The Commerce of Literature: Marketplace and Representation], an extensive study of the English literary market in the 18th century.  His latest research has been concerned with the digital literature and digital culture. He has taught several courses and seminars on digital media.
